A lifelong resident of Branford, CT, he was born in Branford on December 22, 1922, son or the late Ricardo and Catherine Almondo Torino. He died April 27, 2008, at home surrounded by his family.
He was educated in Branford School System. He served in the US Army Signal Corps during WWII, and went with his unit to the Quebec Conference in 1943 at which Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill met. He also served in China/Burma/India during 1945 and early 1946.
He worked in the dairy industry for 30 years, first at Sealtest and then Knudsen Bros. and retired when Knudsen closed in 1979. He then worked for another 8 years for New Haven Terminal. Inc.
Following the war, he was a member of the Branford Laurels football team for several years. He and his first wife, Jean Johnson Torino, worked extensively with the CYO of St. Mary Church in Branford, for which they were awarded the first "Pro Deo et Juvenante" Award by Archbishop Henry J. O'Brien in 1966. They also were involved with fundraising for the Shoreline Association for Retired and Handicapped (SARAH) and St. Mary Church. After her death Chubby continued to coach CYO Basketball for St. Mary for several more years.
He was a volunteer fireman with Headquarters Company in Branford for approximately 40 years and attained the rank of First Lieutenant. He was a member of Teamsters Retiree Chapter #443, Branford Land Trust, Faulkner's Light Brigade; a former member of American Legion Post 83, St. Mary's Holy Name Society, and St Mary's Home and School Association.
He is survived by his second wife, June Blackman Torino; I son, Christopher Torino (wife Barbara) of Hadley, New York; 2 daughters, Bonnie Battista of West Haven, and Ann Marie McCarthy (husband Patrick) of Branford; 8 grandchildren: Richard, Andrew and Sarah Torino; Michael, Matthew and Christopher McCarthy: Albert and John Battista; a great-grandson, Nicolas Torino; a sister, Mary Modzelewski; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his first wife, he was predeceased by brothers Frank and Albert and sisters Assunta (Susie) Shilinski and Rosina Pace. His family would like friends to join them at St. Elizabeth's Church, Branford, for a Mass of Christian Burial Friday morning at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
