Catherine Elizabeth Scallen Carl, 88, a longtime resident of West Haven, entered into heavenly rest on May 19, 2009.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 63 years, Harry I. Carl Jr. She is survived by her daughters and their families: Kathleen and Dennis Jones of Lebanon, Ohio, Patricia Carl-Stannard and Edward Stannard Jr. of Branford, Eileen Tobin of Clinton and Dr. Timothy Tobin of Old Saybrook; four grandchildren, Patricia Habenicht and husband Rob, Brian and Meagan Tobin, and Luke Stannard; and one great-grandchild, Aiden Habenicht. She also leaves her "fourth daughter," Barbara Gallagher Jarry, and devoted neighbor, Maria Stevens.
Catherine was born May 2, 1921, in Crompton, R.I., daughter of the late Hugh and Alice Fogarty Scallen. She was a member of St. Lawrence Church in West Haven for many years and of Trinity Church on the Green in New Haven.
She worked as a bookkeeper at Bullard's Furniture and the Wm. Hotchkiss Co. and as administrative assistant at the West Haven Community House until her retirement. She was active in the St. Lawrence School PTA, St. Therese's Guild and as a Girl Scout leader. She was loved by many friends and co-workers.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 6, at Trinity Episcopal Church on the Green, Temple and Chapel Streets, New Haven. A reception will follow at the church. Burial will be private.
The family offers deep thanks to the staff of the Mary Wade Home, who were friends as well as caregivers to Catherine and offered loving care to her throughout her stay and especially in her last days.
