Fran was born in New Haven on March 7, 1918 to the late Frank R. and Augusta K. Whitney. Mrs. Bowerman was a graduate of Hillhouse High School and Quinnipiac University. She was employed by the law firm of Gumbart, Corbin, Tyler and Cooper. For years, Fran was an active community member, serving as the volunteer manager of the Yale New Haven Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop, an organizer for the American Red Cross in its blood donation program in Orange, and a member of the Altar Guild of the Church of the Good Shepherd.
Fran was an active sports participant. As a member of the New Haven Badminton Club, she competed at the state championship level. She was a member of the Racebrook Country Club where she shared a golf championship. She was equally successful at Province Lake Country Club in Maine. Fran also loved bowling and duplicate bridge.
Fran's creative talents encompassed a love of amateur theater where she played leading roles in plays at the Milford Summer Theater and the Paugussett Players in Orange. Mrs. Bowerman also enjoyed doing needlework and, most notably, the creation of pewter ornaments that she presented to her family and friends each year.
However, her supreme commitment and devotion was as a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother to whom she was known as "Grammy". All cherished her warm laugh and smile.
