In Branford February 4, 2010, Stanley Gumkowski, husband of the late Marion Padzinski Gumkowski of 27 Mill Creek Rd., Branford.
Father of Robert (Celeste) Kelsey of Clinton, Paul (Martie) Gumkowski of Clinton, John (Katherine) Gumkowski of North Haven, and Carol Gumkowski of Branford. Brother of Evelyn Hamilton and Judy Limoncelli of Branford. Also survived by 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by brothers, Frank and Edward Gumkowski.
He was born June 16, 1921 in Branford, son of the late Julius and Helen Arkasky Gumkowski, and was a lifelong resident of Branford. He served in the U. S. Army with the Branford Battery in WWII and was awarded a Purple Heart. He worked for many years as a Postal Clerk at the Post Office on Brewery St., in New Haven. He was a member of the Branford Elks Club, BPOE 1939, and American Legion Post 83 in Branford.
He played basketball and baseball for Branford during his youth and was elected to the Branford Sports Hall of Fame in 1998. He was a multi-gallon blood donor for the American Red Cross. He was an avid bowler and horseshoe player.
His family would like to thank the staff at CT Hospice for the care shown to Stanley during his illness.
Funeral from the W. S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 504 Main St., Branford Monday morning at 10:30 for a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary Church at 11:00. Friends may call Sunday from 3 – 6 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter, 749 East Main St., Branford, CT 06405.
